The figure behind the headline

Our video follows Typhoon Saudel's rain and flood impacts in southeastern China. Xinhua reported that 599,000 people had been evacuated in Fujian Province by 5 September. That figure describes movement away from risk; it is not a death toll, a count of flooded homes, or proof that every evacuated person suffered damage. The video headline uses a rounded lower figure, while the sourced count is the dated 599,000 snapshot.

Why rain remained dangerous inland

Saudel made a third landfall in Fujian on 3 September after earlier landfalls in Zhejiang. Its heavy rain affected communities beyond the coast, including parts of neighboring Jiangxi. A tropical cyclone can lose wind strength after landfall while still producing dangerous rain, flash flooding and slope failures. The most useful question for residents is whether their local authority has an active flood or evacuation notice, not whether the cyclone still carries a typhoon label.

The Xinhua figure can change as local authorities reconcile evacuation records. This article records the 5 September report and does not present that count as a current live total.
