Heat outlasts the calendar
The Weather Prediction Center's 14 September short-range discussion warned that dangerous late-summer heat would continue across the south-central United States through midweek. September brings shorter days, but a persistent high-pressure ridge can still produce hazardous afternoon temperatures and warm nights. The absence of overnight relief is especially important for people without reliable cooling.
A regional contrast
The same national discussion described cooler, drier air across much of the eastern U.S. and a more active storm pattern over the West and Plains. A national “autumn is arriving” headline therefore conceals sharply different local conditions. HeatRisk, local advisories and county forecasts are more useful than a broad seasonal label.
The discussion is a forecast issued on 14 September, not a record of measured temperatures at every location. Check a local National Weather Service office for the current advisory area and timing.
